Morgan and I never set out to start a mold remediation company. Restore + Renew was born from a deep personal need following our own winding journey.
Morgan was diagnosed with a terminal illness and stage 4 heart failure, went through chemotherapy, made it to remission and still was worsening. At a time when we should have been celebrating hope, we were still actively planning his funeral. All the while, my symptoms were ramping up — rashes, heart palpitations, brain fog, lethargy, hair loss, and a food intolerance list a mile long, growing by the minute. After numerous doctor’s visits without answers, and the ever unhelpful suggestion of a psych consult, we finally by the grace of God found a functional practitioner who took us seriously. She was the first to suggest mold illness.
It still took another nine months to find the problem. Two companies came to take air samples and told us everything was fine. The third actually checked inside our walls, attic, and HVAC. It was everywhere — just hidden. The worst case scenario was the best news I’d ever heard in my life!
Our remediation did not go as we’d hoped and resulted in Morgan studying the protocols himself, finishing the work in our home, and earning clearance from the assessor. Word began to spread and the phone began to ring.
We struggled with the idea of creating a business around devastatingly painful moments for so many. After a little resistance and a lot of prayer, Morgan finally surrendered to the Lord’s prompting and obtained his license — as it turns out, the weight of leaving families without an option to heal was far heavier.
The path back home had far more turns than we would have liked — necessary side steps and a few knee-jerk reactions led to seven moves, several years, and a considerable amount of resources wasted. But with each questionable decision, we gathered more information on what not to do. We made every mistake, so you don’t have to.
Our best healing has happened right back in the home that made us sick — we’ve welcomed a new little one into the world, Morgan’s been downgraded to stage 2 heart failure, and our children are thriving, emotionally and physically.
Our hearts ache alongside each of you as you enter this season. No matter how large or small, mold is never something any of us plan for. It is my sincere hope that Restore + Renew will be a source of encouragement and truth for you as you walk forward. We are a living testimony — healing is possible.
With hope,Monica
